Hot

Rising off the blacktop

An eerie quivering phantom,

Dancing to a raucous tune

That no one else can hear.

Summer heat debates its fate

With elementary elements

As those of flesh go sweltering

Inside their darkened dens.

Who can blame them?

Every form of life is seeking respite now.

Even the brave sunflower has

Had enough of its namesake.

Panting pets seek shaded solace,

Post their signs, “Do not disturb”.

Nothing moving save the birds who

Seek the comfort of the sky.

How much longer until winter?

How I long to shovel snow.
