A Million and One

I take the time to say, “I love you”,
Like so many times before.
It’s like saying, “See you later”
As I’m walking out the door.
Every time is like the first time
And you are the prize that I’ve won.
I know that I’ve said it a million times.
This makes a million and one.

Everyone tells me I’m lucky.
I can’t help but notice it’s true.
You brought my heart out of darkness.
My life began the day that I met you.
You took a chance, placed your wager,
But I was the gambler who won.
Chance may only be one in a million, but
You are a million and one.

Every day life just gets sweeter
As we walk in the sun hand in hand,
And I realize what’s there in your eyes
Knowing you’re more than a lover and friend.

Time won’t erase what we’re feeling,
Or take away one simple thing.
We’ll face each new dawn together.
Every day is the first day of spring.
Finding a new way, if need be, to be
Close to you when day is done.
At the end of a million beginnings
We’ll find a million and one.

Alone

There’s a tale told by fools of a fairytale world
Filled with dreams,
Where night never falls and honey flows wild
In the streams.
But when twilight comes crashing, and your waiting here
By the phone.
And it finally hits you, the meaning
Of being alone.

It’s a feeling that settles inside to tell you it’s true.
The one thing you thought was forever is over and through.
It’s a double-edged blade that slices and cuts to the bone.
You just never get use to the silence
Of being alone.

There is no way to describe all the emptiness
That you’re feeling inside.
You look in the mirror but there’s no reflection.
Your heart has gone looking for someplace to hide.

No one to free you.
No one to call but yourself.
You have a choice to rescue your soul
And climb down from your shelf.
Do you swim murky waters
Or let yourself sink like a stone?
It’s all up to you; you don’t have to face it
Alone.

Silk and Lace

Bracing myself for a fiery conflict,
Keeping my head down low.
Offering a prayer to the man above,
Trying not to let my feelings show.
Thinking about you a half a world away
And how I long to see your face,
Wanting just to feel your tender touch,
Missing your silk and lace.

People said that we were never meant to be,
Said that we would never last.
Your Momma and your Daddy both agreed
That we were moving way too fast.
But they could never know your affect on me,
How you cause my heart to race,
Or how I close my eyes every single night
Dreaming of your silk and lace.

And it doesn’t matter if the world goes by
And passes to eternity,
We don’t have to wonder where or why,
You and I were always meant to be.

There will come a time, and it won’t be long,
I’ll be coming home to you.
I’ll leave these boots and battles far behind,
And trade them for a heart that’s true.
I won’t have to dream about your loving smile
Or think about your warm embrace.
Huddled close together every single night,
Touching your silk and lace.

Walk Away

It’s deep in December,
The days have grown shorter,
Just like your patience with me.
Nights that blow cold
Both inside and out
In our snow-covered destiny.
I know that we would both be better off
If we would just call it a day.
But it’s really hard
To lay down your cards,
Get up and just walk away.

We’ve faced some fears in our stormy years,
Together we’ve managed to win.
But lately it seems we’re on different teams
Pulling the rope from both ends.
If this is the game that our destiny calls for,
Honey, I don’t want to play.
We’ve been through too much to limp by on a crutch,
It’s better to just walk away.

I wish there was some way to make it all better,
Take back all the things that I said, but
I don’t have a potion or miracle pill
To remove all those echoing words from your head.

Guess I could tell you that I was just blinded
By anger in visions of red.
So full of myself, caught in the moment,
I couldn’t control all the things that I said.
But that wouldn’t matter in our big decision.
Do I leave or do I stay?
I think we both know
It’s time to go.
It’s over, so just walk away.

Rock My World

My life was simple and
A bit routine,
Joy was something
That was seldom seen.
You came storming
Making my life swirl,
Head first diving just to
Rock my world.

Rock my world,
Shake it all apart,
Just be careful not to
Break my heart.
Days are diamonds
And my nights are pearls,
Just like paradise,
Baby, rock my world.

You’re the queen of hearts
Who breaks the rules, and
I’d be happy
Just to play your fool.
Tell me that you’ll
Always be my girl.
We’ll just keep flying,
Baby, rock my world.

Rock my world,
Shake it all apart,
Just be careful not to
Break my heart.
Days are diamonds
And my nights are pearls,
Just like paradise,
Baby, rock my world.

To Touch Your Heart

There is no easy way
To get it done,
To say convincingly
You’re my only one.
No one to whisper in my ear,
Tell me where to start
To find those simple words
To touch your heart.

I’ve tried a million times
To let you know
Just how my love for you
Continues to grow.
But I can’t find the words
That will truly impart,
Words that spring from my soul
To touch your heart.

Maybe it’s not just the words that I speak
That send the real message your way.
Actions speak louder they say in the end,
And I try to show you every day.

I’ll keep on looking,
Searching my soul,
Maybe buy a dictionary,
Make it my goal
To find the right phrases
Both tender and smart,
The right words
To touch your heart.

Sexy, Sassy, Saucy

You keep making passes, sweeter than molasses,
Winking, blinking back at me.
Every little motion working like a potion
Blocking out reality.
Playing with my mind, leaving reason far behind,
Lift me ten feet off the ground.
Because you’re sexy, sassy, saucy
And you make my world go ‘round.

You keep turning heads in that sexy little dress
From the minute you walk through the door.
But I don’t dare to touch, I’m afraid you’re way too much,
You just make me want to cry for more.
I’m trying not to grin when I take it on the chin
And you ask me if I’m man enough.
You’re so sexy, sassy, saucy
And I just want to feel your touch.

You weaken my resistance
Until I don’t know where it went.
I’m so gone on you I swear
I would vote for you for president.

There is no mistake how you make my whole world shake
With that body that you carry around.
Just one look was all it took
And I swallowed the whole hook
Like a fish flopping out on the ground.
It don’t matter what I do, I’m not getting over you.
You’re the best thing to come into my world.
You’re so sexy, sassy, saucy
And I want you to be my girl.

Fish Out of Water

You wanted me to come and meet your family,
To show me off to all your kith and kin,
But I’m not really comfortable with all that touchy feely
That seems so necessary to fit in.
I’m just a simple guy with simple feelings,
The kind of man that some folks just don’t get,
But you want me to flop around, politely mix and mingle
Like a fish out of water caught up in your net.

There’s no easy way to get around it,
Doesn’t matter what I do or say.
My reasoning and protests just confound it.
I’m like a fish out of water
Trying to get away.

My Mamma used to tell me, “Son, just listen
To the sounds of reason drifting in the air.”
The truth is we’re all in this thing together,
And people are just people everywhere.
But I can’t seem to get my mind around it
No matter how hard I crane my neck,
Can’t find a comfort zone
To be out there on my own.
I’m just a fish out of water
Flopping on the deck.

Let’s Get Naked and Run Through the Sprinklers

I’ve wanted to show you so often
Exactly what you mean to me,
But I was afraid of what people would say
If I acted out so obviously.
We’re victims of our inhibitions.
It’s apparent when push comes to shove.
Why don’t we get naked and run through the sprinklers
And show the whole world we’re in love?

You say that I can’t act crazy,
I’m just an old stick in the mud.
Left to myself and my own devices
I’m like an old cow chewing cud.
But I’m tired of misunderstandings.
I’m ready to show the whole world.
I say let’s get naked and run through the sprinklers?
I’m willing to give it a whirl.

Life is too short to sit idly by
While the rest of the world marches on.
There are so many things I want us to try
Before all of the best of our good times are gone.

It’s not so hard to imagine
The kind of unrest we might cause.
Jaws dropping down to their ankles,
Eyes clearly popping in awe.
I’m ready to shed inhibitions
For you and polite company.
Why don’t we get naked and run through the sprinklers
And show the whole world that we’re free.

The Problem Is…

We were so in love in the beginning.
After all this time I feel the same.
I still get that tingling sensation
At the simple mention of your name.
I want us to go on for forever
Hand in hand to walk through every door,
Growing up and growing old together.
The problem is you don’t love me anymore.

Not quite sure exactly when it happened,
When we started drifting so apart.
Was I blind or did I just not listen
To the deafening sound of silence from your heart?
We could try to work it out together.
You know you’re the one that I adore.
My love for you is meant to be forever.
The problem is you don’t love me anymore.

Not content to sing you silly love songs.
They won’t win your heart back anyway.
I just want to find the combination
To make you stay forever, forever and a day.

You could just forget these crazy notions,
I believe that we’re worth fighting for.
I’ll keep wanting you until forever.
The problem is you don’t love me anymore.

Fast Track

I don’t need to buy you diamonds, furs or fast cars,
I don’t need fancy words meant to impress.
You don’t seem to want to talk about forever,
Or picking out that special wedding dress.
And I don’t need to dress in shining armor
To rescue you and make a brand new start.
Only need to find a quick solution
To put me on the fast track to your heart.

I keep hearing angels singing love songs
As flashes of the future come in view.
Can someone please write down some clear directions
To put me on the fast track straight to you.

It’s true we were meant to be together.
I could see it clearly from the day we met.
There’s no doubt we will last forever,
And I can give my heart without regret.
I just don’t know how to say the right things
To convince you that we will never part.
The kind of things that lovers share so freely
To put me on the fast track to your heart.

I keep hearing angels singing love songs
As flashes of the future come in view.
Can someone please write down some clear directions
To put me on the fast track straight to you.

Blank Pages

I’m staring at this mountain of blank pages
Wondering just what I should do.
Maybe I could write a brand new love song
And dedicate my heart and soul to you.
Words should fall right out of the heavens,
Ink should flow onto the empty lines,
But no words I can think of do you justice.
I don’t know what to write to make you mine.

You don’t need to worry ‘bout a love song.
Actions speak much louder anyway.
I may keep on staring at blank pages,
But I’ll show you that I love you every day.

I may not have the gift of gab to tell you,
May not be the man of letters you desire,
Can’t put the words together that will show you
How just the thought of you can start my fire.
I may not have a vast vocabulary,
And I don’t have a muse to stir my soul,
And even though the pages
May not have an ink stain on them
My love for you is made of purest gold.

You don’t need to worry ‘bout a love song.
Actions speak much louder anyway.
I may keep on staring at blank pages,
But I’ll show you that I love you every day.

Spellbound

You’re not a Wiccan but
You’ve surely got me spellbound.
Your wiles and your ways have
Truly put you in control.
The web that you spin
Keeps drawing me in
And I can’t help but believe
That it was your goal.
I’m spellbound down deep in my soul.

The day that we met
You brought me out of the darkness,
Gave me new hope to
Start all over again.
I never knew
A feeling so true
And I can’t help but believe
That it won’t ever end.
I’m spellbound; determined to win.

You came to me fresh as the lilacs in springtime,
Captured my eye, and then you captured my heart.
In less than a moment my will was gone on vacation,
And now I’m sure we’ll never again be apart.

There’ll never be
A way to explain what I’m feeling;
The million and one things
That your love does for me.
A magic untold
Yet to unfold
And we’ll just take hold of our dreams
And dance in the moonlight.

I’m spellbound and that’s how it must be.

If Only You’d Answer the Phone

I got your letter on Saturday morning,
The one where you told me, “this is so long”.
I tried to call you to say I still love you.
I’d tell you if only you’d answer the phone.

Three days of highways are standing between us
And I know it’s hard being there all alone.
I’d rush right to you in a blind New York minute.
I’d be there if only you’d answer the phone.

I would come running like a hundred yard dash,
Jump on a plane and be there in a flash.
If I could just hear you say, “Babe, come on home.”
I’d be there if only you’d answer the phone.

I just hung up for the forty-fifth time.
I can’t wait around anymore.
Straight to the airport, no more wasted time.
I’ll soon be at your front door.

You have to tell me why your mind has changed.
What can I do to atone?
It could have been easier to speak to your heart
If only you’d answered the phone.

Delirious

Delirious…
Serious…
Sometimes makes me furious.
Just a bit too curious
For my own good.

Got to know…
Got to go…
Afraid to let my feelings show.
Couldn’t take the pain of
Being misunderstood.

Why can’t I take a stand and
Just let it be?
Why does all this aggravation
Keep coming back and haunting me?

I see you cry…
Don’t know why…
No confession… no alibi…
Just a wall of silent tears
I can’t break through.

I refrain
Til you explain…
Waiting out this pouring rain
Because I am so deliriously
In love with you.

Everything will be Alright

I remember those times back when I was a kid
When the world would come crashing
With all of its might.
No one could save me til Momma stepped in
To assure me that “everything will be alright”.

Life can be crazy.
Life can be cruel.
Sometimes you can’t tell what’s wrong from what’s right.
But Mom was the touchstone that made it all clear
Saying, “Don’t you know everything will be alright?”

I can still see her standing at the front door,
Her eyes filled with wisdom, without any fears,
Knowing the answer before I asked the questions,
Ready to wipe away all of my tears.

I hope that her days never turn dark and gray,
Hope that her future will always be bright.
But if she ever needs me
I’ll reach out my hand
And say, “Don’t worry, Momma,
Everything will be alright.”

Climb the Stairs

So much to tell you…
So little time…
Longing the sweet taste
Of your lips on mine.
Washing away
All our worries and cares.
Time stands still
As we climb the stairs.

Days last forever
When we are apart,
Counting each second
Til I find my heart.
The glint of your smile,
The scent of your hair,
Life begins
As we climb the stairs.

Life is a highway and you hold the keys
To every dream that I weave.
I would be nothing without loving you,
That’s why I’m wearing my heart on my sleeve.

I count my blessings
And say a brief prayer,
Knowing how wonderful
My life can be.
When we climb the stairs
At the end of the day
Up to Heaven…
Just you and me.

The Wind Sings Your Name

The breezes glide free over welcoming trees
Who sway back and forth as if playing a game,
And a song, sweet and gentle, comes soft to my ear,
Ever clear as the wind sings your name.

I walk next to Heaven with your hand in mine,
Let the rest of the world go insane.
We’re here together at the end of the day
Huddled close as the wind sings your name.

Never a question,
Never a doubt,
No need for us to pretend.
Any time we see the end of a road,
We find a way to start over again.

I only know when I walk close to you
We know where we’re going
From the way that we’ve came.
To listen,
To wonder,
To know that it’s true,
It’s you…
And the wind sings your name.

Drink to Us

Raise a glass,
          Raise a bottle,
Drain the keg if you please,
Run your engine full throttle
                    In the cool evening breeze.
Be a friend,
          Be a partner,

Be the one that I trust.
Drink a toast to forever,
          Drink to us.

I can recall all the good times we’ve known,
The million and one ways our friendship has grown,
The laughter, the tears, the frets and the fuss,
So, let’s toast to ourselves,
Drink to us.

Raise a glass,
          Raise a bottle,
Drain the keg if you please,
Run your engine full throttle
In the cool evening breeze.
Be a friend,
          Be a partner,
Be the one that I trust.
Drink a toast to forever,
          Drink to us.

Never say never, and always be true.
I can’t imagine a time without you.
We’re taking our time. There’s no need to rush.
Raise your glass one more time.
Drink to us.

Whispering Trees

Secrets are living
In every corner,
Riding the waves of
A soft summer breeze,
Hiding in colors
That follow the rainbow,
Born on the soft breath
Of whispering trees.

Rose colored glasses
Can make things seem better,
Hide all the misery
To a degree,
But the trees bare their fruit
In hushes and whispers,
Yielding the harsh truth of reality.

Sweet sighs and goodbyes abound in her boughs,
Every word ever said.
Silence and thunder and all in between,
Every thought out of every head.

You can find Heaven,
You can find hell,
You can fall down
On your knees.
Offer a prayer for
The knowledge you find
In the voices of
Whispering trees.

Tight Black Leather

Hattie walks into the Red Rooster Bar,
Every head turns her way.
Jaws drop, eyes blink, tongues get all tied up,
Nobody knows what to say.
Married guys wishing that they were still single,
Single guys starting to drool,
Watching her walking in that tight black leather,
Anxious to offer a welcome barstool.

She doesn’t see the effect that she’s having,
Or maybe she knows.
A wink and a blink and an innocent smile
Can take her as far as she’s wanting to go.

Someday I’m hoping to work up the nerve
To go up and ask her to dance.
But I wouldn’t want her to laugh in my face,
I’d be afraid to take such a chance.
Women like Hattie are special, you know.
On that point we all can agree.
She’s crossing the room in that tight black leather,
And I hope she sits next to me.

What do I do if she bids me ‘hello’?
Will my lips find an opening line?
Will I stutter and stammer to find the right words
To say to a lady who seems so refined?
I just stay quiet as she walks on by,
Though I think she did glance my way.
She keeps walking on in that sleek tight black leather
Never knowing she just made my day.

Working the Room

Champagne glasses clink together,
Laughter fills the evening air,
Music set its subtle mood as
Fashion flashes everywhere.
In the middle of it all
You begin to weave your loom,
And I can only stand in awe
To watch you work the room.

There’s a sparkle in your eye
Meant for all the world to know,
Captured from a midnight sky,
Projected in its afterglow.
Lifting up your audience
Far beyond the waning moon,
Magic follows everywhere as you’re
Working the room.

Others try to steal your spotlight,
But they can’t compete.
They just fade into the background,
Left to worship at your feet.

You are every roving star
Filling up the nighttime sky,
Flaunting wings of fantasy;
Never mind the reason why.
Finding favor everywhere to
Chase away the gloom.
There’s a celebration as you’re
Working the room.

Trails of Trials

Take this cup away.
I’ve already filled it up with tears
Traveled down this road before;
Been a wayward rover all these years;
Blazed a thousand trails,
Must have wandered for a million miles,
Wondering if there will be an end
To these trails of trials.

I keep wanting to pretend
Everything is alright,
Flip a switch and start again
To sing a brand new song,
Take another golden path
To lead me to happiness,
But every time I turn my head I see
That the feeling is wrong.

Hit the highway running strong,
Nothing really left to lose,
Take directions from the wind,
Find a brand new attitude.
Maybe I can change my luck,
Maybe just a few more miles
I can find a brand new me
On these trails of trials.
