Fish Out of Water

You wanted me to come and meet your family,
To show me off to all your kith and kin,
But I’m not really comfortable with all that touchy feely
That seems so necessary to fit in.
I’m just a simple guy with simple feelings,
The kind of man that some folks just don’t get,
But you want me to flop around, politely mix and mingle
Like a fish out of water caught up in your net.

There’s no easy way to get around it,
Doesn’t matter what I do or say.
My reasoning and protests just confound it.
I’m like a fish out of water
Trying to get away.

My Mamma used to tell me, “Son, just listen
To the sounds of reason drifting in the air.”
The truth is we’re all in this thing together,
And people are just people everywhere.
But I can’t seem to get my mind around it
No matter how hard I crane my neck,
Can’t find a comfort zone
To be out there on my own.
I’m just a fish out of water
Flopping on the deck.
